How to Adapt a Morning Routine for Taking Care of Both Your Skin & Soul
If I’ve learned anything in this life, it’s that mornings matter. Think of a time you overslept and the mania that came along with it—not only during the rushing-around part, but for the entire day afterwards. When I have time to slowly move through my routine and give my mind and body a chance to breathe a little, my productivity and general mood increases by leaps and bounds.
So, with that in mind, I’ve curated a morning routine that sets me up for a good day and healthy skin. It includes some coffee (because I’m not superhuman), candles, and a nice dose of good-for-you skin care.
Below, find my new wellness self care routine, as well as the best ways to make them work for your zen-like mornings. (Yes, it’s possible even with kids!)
The Slow Start of Your Morning Routine
After waking up before my kids, I get out of bed and make myself a cup of coffee. My morning routine is meant to infuse just enough quiet and calming vibes to get me ready to take on the day. As such, I light a candle and sip slowly—in silence—for about 20 minutes (I try for this long but it’s not always the case and that’s okay) while the morning light fills my living room before beginning my skin care routine.
The Cleanse
First in the skin care rotation is a delicate and soothing facial cleanser formulated with Manuka honey, turmeric, and chamomile. Turmeric is the most exciting part, as it’s known for its soothing, detoxifying, and anti-inflammatory benefits, a close second being the antioxidant benefits of Manuka honey and deeply calming properties of the chamomile. The formula delicately lathers to remove any dirt or makeup, leaving my skin feeling soft and refreshed before applying the rest of my skin care.
Breathe slowly and massage it in for maximum relaxation.
The Moisture
I try to use a fragrance-free formula brimming with ceramides and hyaluronic acid from Pevonia. It works to hydrate, plump, nourish, and comfort. Plus, the nighttime version moisturizer I use also contains buckuchiol, a plant-based alternative to retinol to improve my skin’s tone and texture.
The Facial Massage
Now comes the fun part: a facial roller that stimulates my skin and helps to de-puff and smooth. The stone, obsidian, is said to remove negativity (I’ll take it) or sometimes I’ll use jade or rose quartz to help me find peace, love, and relaxation, and it feels cool to the touch (I try to keep them chilled in the fridge!). I roll it against my skin, pressing up and out, and it absolutely feels meditative—while increasing circulation and encouraging lymphatic drainage.
The Buttery Balm
The last step in my feel-good morning routine is sunscreen to keep hyperpigmentation and wrinkles from coming my way. In winter, I add a body lotion to keep every inch of me hydrated so I still look and feel glowing and fight the ever-drying weather from making my skin work overtime.
