Tips For Flawless Summer Skin
With summer around the corner, I wanted to take a moment to focus on a few different key ways we can protect our skin from the inside out. UV protection is vital, especially here in Florida where sunburns can get pretty severe in almost no time at all. Thus, one of the best ways to keep your skin youthful and healthy is to protect it from severe overexposure. Feeding the skin with a nutrient-rich diet and staying hydrated are also vital for maintaining skin’s elasticity and glow.
On the other hand, when sunburns do occur, it’s important to give the skin some love and help it heal and rejuvenate. Let’s look at these four things in a little more detail:
1. Protect Your Skin
Trust me, the golden tan you seek is more safely obtained through the proper use of sunscreen. Burning your skin to a crisp and letting it “turn into a tan” is not the way to go. Sadly, even tanned skin is damaged skin. Overdoing it on sun exposure can lead to wrinkles, dark spots, breakouts and more serious skin issues. Apply (and reapply!) an SPF that’s gentle on the skin before hitting the beach or being out in the sun—I personally love the Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30 by Pevonia; it’s free of parabens, totally natural and protects from UVA and UVB rays. Protect your face and lips as well by donning a cute, wide-brimmed floppy hat and some SPF lip balm as well.
2. Feed Your Skin
Replenishing the skin is not just about topically applying products to it. A nutrient-rich diet can truly make all the difference to the look and feel of your skin. Antioxidants are vitamins and minerals known for their ability to help the body repair damage to its various tissues—including the skin. There are lots of foods that contain these vital nutrients, including vegetables, fruits, nuts and some meats. Stocking up on antioxidants may help your skin to replenish itself from the inside out, after sun damage has taken place.
3. Stay Hydrated
Yes, you’ve heard me say this before. Water is your friend. But I’ll say it again—drink water! Waiting until you’re thirsty or depending on sugary drinks to quench your thirst is not the way to go.
How much water should you drink? Simply cut your body weight in half, and that number (in ounces) is roughly how much water you should be drinking on a daily basis. For example, if you way 150 lbs, your daily water consumption should be somewhere around 75 oz. If you’re spending lots of time outside or getting sweaty, you may need more than that.
4. Treat Damaged Skin
After a particularly bad sunburn or if the skin is acting angry due to sun exposure (breakouts, excessive oiliness, flakiness, redness, etc.), show your skin a little love. A specialty facial or a body exfoliating treatment might do the trick to get your skin balanced, healthy and back on track. Tell your facialist or aesthetician what you have been experiencing and he/she can help target the problems by using natural or botanical-based treatments your skin will love.
