Brazilian Waxing FAQ: What You Need to Know Before You Bare it All

Living in Florida means it’s bikini season almost all year round. Being a spa near Clearwater Beach, we know that waxing is a necessity for many women.

For first timers, getting a wax “down there” can be an intimidating experience. To alleviate your fears, I wanted to give you the lo-down on Brazilian waxing with answers to these Brazilian waxing FAQs:

What’s the difference between a bikini wax and Brazilian wax?

First and foremost, lets go over what areas are covered with a bikini versus a Brazilian wax. In a typical bikini wax, just the outside of the bikini line, or any hair visible beyond the boundaries of a swimsuit, is removed. With the oh-so-popular Brazilian wax, all hair is removed from “front to back,” so to speak.

How long should my hair be when getting a Brazilian?

Now for what is, in my opinion, the hardest part. Your hair must be grown out to ¼ inch (long enough to grab with your fingers). This translates to 2-3 weeks of NO SHAVING. But the end results will make you regret that you didn’t start waxing years ago! Your hair will also become thinner and less coarse with continual waxing.

Should I exfoliate before?

Maybe you’ve heard about exfoliating your legs before shaving for a closer, smoother shave. The same is true for Brazilian waxing. You can lightly exfoliate using just a washcloth in a warm shower to open up the pores and get the hairs ready for waxing. Also, there is a fabulous product called PFB that helps prep the area for waxing.

When is the best time to get waxed?

It is recommended to not get your bikini waxed within the same week before your period, because you will be more sensitive. But you CAN get waxed any time you choose, even during your monthly cycle.

Is a Brazilian painful?

You can experience discomfort with any waxing service. Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, so it is hard to pin point what level of pain you will be in. At Botanica Day Spa, we pride ourselves on waxing very efficiently so you do not have to endure the discomfort for very long.

Is there anything I can do for the pain?

At Botanica Day Spa, we carry a product called “Numb It” that you can purchase in our retail area. You just apply yourself 15-20 before your appointment.

What type of wax is used? What is the method of application?

We use a sensitive skin wax by the skin care line Pevonia. It has azulene (a plant extract from Roman chamomile), which delivers effective relief from razor burn, bumps, redness and irritation. Wax is applied using a wooden application stick. The sticks are not reused and we do not double dip the stick into the wax.

Will my skin be sensitive after waxing?

Probably. While everyone is different, you may notice the skin is pink and sensitive for the rest of the day and possibly the following day. This is totally normal. I recommend that you apply PFB Vanish daily after your waxing to prevent ingrown hairs, bumps, (it also brightens any discoloration in your skin caused by previous razor burn) and ingrown hairs from shaving, waxing, or tweezing.

How often should I get waxed?

You will have to see how fast your hair grows. People come in anywhere from 3-5 weeks typically. We do not recommend going longer than 6 weeks in between your waxing service, as it will be like the first time all over again.

Well, I hope this answered all your questions. Feel free to comment with any additional questions, and I’ll be happy to answer them.

Happy Waxing!
