Hyperpigmentation: The Causes & Treatments
For a long time, wrinkles used to be the number one skin concern of women everywhere. But recently, dark spots have turned into the “new wrinkle”. Freckles, sunspots, and other dark spots have become the top culprit women want to correct in their skin. All of these variations of dark spots and patches are types of hyperpigmentation. The good news? They are all able to be treated to some degree! (Remember, skin damage is harder to reverse, and much easier to prevent.)
What is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is something that many women (and men) struggle with. It is a skin condition that can make us look and feel older than we really are, and no one wants to acknowledge this issue, which we completely understand. So, what causes these pesky patches of darkness exactly? The perpetrator behind it all is actually part of the defense mechanism of your skin: the production of melanin.
Melanin is the pigment that gives skin, hair, and eyes their color. It also protects our cells from damage caused by things like UV radiation from the sun, high temperatures, and chemical stresses. Many people don’t realize that the hormone Estrogen is one of the biggest triggers for pigmentation. It’s equal, if not more damaging than “trauma” done to skin is through sun exposure. Sun burns and tanning can cause hyperpigmentation, especially if you’re not super vigilant about applying sunscreen and SPF while outside.
Hyperpigmentation sometimes won’t come to the surface of your skin right away, making it difficult to determine the exact cause of it, therefore it’s best to worship an SPF that isn’t too heavy (this will clog your pores and create further skin issues) and something that you can always remember to carry around with you!
Preventing It
Including products such as Vitamin C serum, pigment corrector, dark spot corrector, and retinol in your beauty routine can protect your skin and slow down the production of melanin. Why a Vitamin C product? Vitamin C protects from environmental damage, while a pigment corrector or regulator can limit the creation of Tyrosinase, a melanin catalyst.
Some of the best solutions for hyperpigmentation is to invest in a monthly trip to the spa for a facial that specifically can help treat or reduce your dark spots.
Treatment for Hyperpigmentation at Botanica Day Spa
Sometimes, no matter what precautions we take, we can’t avoid developing dark spots. You may find it difficult to lighten them or treat the problem on your own, which is not recommended as you can cause further damage or risk using the wrong product to treat it. Thankfully, Botanica offers a variety of skincare treatments and facials that can improve the look of hyperpigmentation and leave your skin looking more youthful and less pigmented!
